Hala, capital of the Kree Empire. The warrior Vers keeps dreaming of a crashing plane and an older woman she doesn't know. She has no memories from before six years ago.
Her commander Yon-Rogg tells her to keep her emotions in check and her power, which blasts from her hands, under control. When she meets the Supreme Intelligence, the AI that rules the Kree, it takes the form of the woman from her dreams.
On a Starforce mission to rescue a spy, Vers is ambushed and captured by the Skrulls, aliens who can take any shape.
Skrull leader Talos uses a machine to search her memories: an Air Force base on Earth, a close friend, and the crash of a test plane. Talos is looking for something called Project Pegasus.
Vers escapes and crashes through the roof of a video rental store in Los Angeles. It's Earth, 1995.
Young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury and rookie Phil Coulson arrive. Then Skrulls attack, and Vers chases one onto a train, fighting a Skrull disguised as an old woman.
Fury believes her story about aliens and teams up with her. They head for the Project Pegasus base. Unknown to Fury, his boss Keller is actually Talos in disguise.
Records reveal the woman in her dreams is Dr. Wendy Lawson. And there's a photo of Vers: her real name is Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot listed as killed with Lawson in a 1989 crash. A cat named Goose lives at the base.
"Keller" and the Skrulls arrive. Carol and Fury grab Goose and escape in a jet.
They visit Maria Rambeau, Carol's best friend from the Air Force, the last person to see her. Maria and her daughter Monica are stunned and overjoyed.
Maria shows her photos and tells her who she was: a stubborn woman who got back up every time she was knocked down.
Talos comes to talk, not fight. The Skrulls are refugees driven from their home by the Kree, only looking for their families. Dr. Lawson was really Mar-Vell, a Kree scientist building a faster-than-light engine to help the Skrulls escape.
Listening to the crash recording, Carol remembers everything. After the crash, Yon-Rogg shot Lawson. Carol destroyed the engine to keep it from him and absorbed its explosion. The Kree took her, erased her memory and made her one of their warriors.
Lawson's lab is hidden in orbit around Earth. Maria decides to fly with them, and they head into space.
The lab hides Skrull refugees, including Talos's wife and daughter. The engine's power source is the Tesseract.
Yon-Rogg's team captures them all. Carol is linked to the Supreme Intelligence, which tells her she is nothing without the power the Kree gave her.
Carol remembers every time in her life she fell and got back up. She tears out the device that was limiting her power and unleashes her full strength.
Glowing with power, Carol takes down Starforce. Fury helps the Skrulls escape. Goose turns out to be an alien creature with tentacles, swallows the Tesseract and scratches Fury's eye.
Ronan's Kree fleet prepares to fire missiles at Earth. Carol flies into space, destroys the missiles and smashes through a warship. Ronan retreats.
Yon-Rogg dares her to fight him without her powers. Carol says she has nothing to prove to him, blasts him with one shot, and sends him back to Hala.
Carol leaves to help the Skrulls find a new home. She gives Fury a modified pager to call her in a real emergency.
Fury starts drafting a plan to gather heroes, and names it after Carol's old call sign painted on her plane: Avenger.
Years later, the surviving Avengers are studying Fury's pager. The signal stops, and Carol appears: "Where's Fury?"
Goose coughs up the Tesseract onto Fury's desk.
