In the New Mexico desert, scientist Jane Foster, her mentor Dr. Selvig and her assistant Darcy chase a strange phenomenon in the night sky, and hit a man who appears out of a swirling vortex. The story then jumps back to the realm of the gods.
Long ago, Odin, king of Asgard, defeated the Frost Giants who attacked Earth and took the casket that was the source of their power. His sons Thor and Loki grew up hearing the story.
During the ceremony to crown Thor king, Frost Giants sneak into the vault. The guardian, the Destroyer, kills them, but the ceremony is called off.
Furious, Thor defies his father and takes Loki, the warrior Sif and the Warriors Three to Jotunheim. He picks a fight in front of King Laufey, and a battle erupts.
In the fighting, a Frost Giant grabs Loki's arm, and his skin turns blue. Loki tells no one.
Odin arrives and brings them home, but the peace with the giants is broken. He strips Thor of his power and banishes him to Earth, then enchants the hammer Mjolnir so only someone worthy can lift it, and throws it to Earth too.
Powerless, Thor fights hospital staff and gets sedated, walks into a pet store asking for a horse, and smashes his coffee mug on the floor to ask for another. Jane's team is baffled but intrigued.
Agent Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. seal off the crater where the hammer landed and seize all of Jane's research.
Thor fights his way into the S.H.I.E.L.D. compound in the rain and reaches the hammer. But no matter how hard he pulls, it won't budge. He sinks to his knees.
Loki visits the captured Thor and tells him their father is dead and he can never come home. It's a lie, and Thor is crushed.
In Asgard, Loki confronts Odin. He is actually the son of Laufey, king of the Frost Giants, taken in by Odin as a baby. In the middle of their argument, Odin falls into a deep sleep.
With Odin asleep, Loki takes the throne. Sif and the Warriors Three defy him and go to Earth to bring Thor back.
Released thanks to Selvig, Thor sits with Jane under the stars and tells her about Asgard and the Nine Realms. They grow close.
Loki sends the Destroyer to Earth to get rid of Thor. It burns the small town and overpowers Sif and the Warriors Three.
Powerless, Thor steps up alone so the others can escape. He asks Loki to take his life and spare the rest, and is struck down.
By giving his life for others, Thor has become worthy. Mjolnir flies to his hand, his power returns, and he destroys the Destroyer.
Thor tells Coulson he'll be an ally, promises Jane he'll come back for her, and returns to Asgard.
Loki lets Laufey into Asgard to kill the sleeping Odin, then kills Laufey at the last moment to look like the son who saved his father. Then he turns the Bifrost bridge on Jotunheim to destroy it completely.
Thor fights Loki on the bridge. To save Jotunheim, he smashes the bridge with his hammer, knowing it may mean never seeing Jane again.
At the broken edge, Thor holds Loki and the awakened Odin holds Thor. Loki says he did it for him; Odin answers, "No, Loki." Loki lets go and falls into the void.
Thor tells Odin he isn't ready to be king. Heimdall, the gatekeeper, tells him Jane is still searching for him.
At a S.H.I.E.L.D. base, Fury shows Selvig the glowing Tesseract. Loki appears in a reflection: Selvig is under his control without knowing it.
