Before the universe began, the Dark Elves ruled in darkness. Their king Malekith tried to use a red, fluid power called the Aether to plunge the worlds back into darkness. Odin's father Bor stopped him and hid the Aether where no one could find it. Malekith and a few followers slipped away into a long sleep.
For his attack on New York, Loki is sentenced to life in Asgard's dungeons. Only his mother Frigga visits him.
Thor and his friends restore peace across the Nine Realms. Odin wants Thor to become king, but Thor's heart is with Jane on Earth.
In London, Jane, still waiting for Thor, is on a date when Darcy interrupts with news of strange readings.
In an abandoned factory, objects vanish and float in midair. Jane slips through into another place and the hidden Aether flows into her body.
The Aether's release wakes Malekith from his sleep.
Thor finally reappears. Realizing something is wrong with Jane, he brings her to Asgard. Odin explains that the power inside her is ancient and dangerous.
One of Malekith's followers gets into the prison disguised as a captive, transforms into a monster and breaks out. Loki points him the way.
Malekith attacks the palace. Frigga takes up a sword to protect Jane and holds off Malekith, but his monstrous follower stabs her from behind.
Asgard sends Frigga off on a burning boat. In his cell, Loki grieves alone.
Odin plans to fortify Asgard whatever the cost. Thor defies him and decides to take Jane away, and frees Loki to help.
With help from Heimdall, Sif and the Warriors Three, Thor, Loki and Jane steal a Dark Elf ship and escape Asgard. Loki teases Thor the whole way.
On the Dark Elves' world, Loki pretends to betray Thor to get close to Malekith. Malekith draws the Aether out of Jane, Thor strikes, but the Aether enters Malekith.
When the monstrous follower attacks Thor, Loki takes him down, but is run through himself and goes still in Thor's arms.
The Nine Realms align. At Greenwich in London, Malekith prepares to unleash the Aether and plunge everything into darkness. Jane and Dr. Selvig fight back with scientific gadgets.
Thor and Malekith's battle tumbles through portals from one world to another, with Mjolnir chasing Thor through each of them.
Jane's devices send Malekith back to his own world, where his giant ship falls on him.
Thor tells Odin he won't be king. After he leaves, Odin's form shifts into Loki. Loki is alive, and sitting on the throne in disguise.
Sif and Volstagg decide it's unwise to keep two Infinity Stones in one place and leave the Aether with a man called the Collector. "One down, five to go," he says.
Thor returns to Jane in London and they kiss. Behind them, a creature that wandered in from another world during the battle is still running loose.
