Right after the Battle of New York, Adrian Toomes and his crew have just started a big cleanup contract. Then an agency set up by Tony Stark and the government takes over, and they're out.
Toomes uses alien tech his crew held on to and starts building weapons and selling them to criminals. He builds a mechanical wing suit to fly himself.
It opens with Peter's phone videos of being called to the battle in Germany. Back home, Tony lets him keep the suit and tells him to wait until he's called.
Two months later, Peter suits up after school to patrol the neighborhood, catching bike thieves and giving directions. He calls Happy daily with reports, and hears nothing back.
Peter stops ATM robbers using alien-tech weapons. Back home, his best friend Ned sees him in the suit.
Slipping out of Liz's party, Peter spots a weapons deal. The winged Vulture drops him into a lake, and a remote-controlled Iron Man suit saves him.
With Ned's help, Peter unlocks the suit's restrictions, and the AI inside starts talking to him. He names her Karen. The suit has hundreds of features.
On the academic decathlon trip to Washington, Peter learns his friends are trapped in a failing elevator in the monument. He climbs the outside and saves them just in time.
Peter finds another deal on the Staten Island Ferry and tries to stop it alone. A weapon misfires and splits the ferry in two. Tony arrives and holds it together.
Tony takes back the suit. Peter ruined an FBI operation and put many lives at risk. "If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it."
Peter asks Liz to the homecoming dance. When he picks her up, the man who opens the door is Toomes, the Vulture, Liz's father.
Driving them to the dance, Toomes figures out who Peter is. Before they get out, he thanks Peter for saving his daughter, then quietly threatens to kill everyone he loves if he interferes.
Peter leaves Liz at the dance and changes into his old homemade suit. Ned helps from the school as Peter fights Toomes's partner, the Shocker.
Toomes brings the building down on Peter. Trapped, he cries for help, then sees his reflection in a puddle, tells himself to get up, and lifts the rubble off himself.
Toomes attacks a plane carrying the Avengers' gear to their new base. Peter leaps onto the plane and fights him in the sky.
The plane crashes on the beach near Coney Island. When Toomes's damaged wings are about to explode, Peter pulls him from the fire and leaves him webbed up for the police.
With her father arrested, Liz moves away.
Tony offers Peter a place in the Avengers, with a new suit and a press conference. Peter turns it down to stay a neighborhood hero. Tony ends up announcing his engagement to Pepper instead.
Back home, Peter finds the suit Tony returned to him. He puts it on, and Aunt May walks in.
In prison, another inmate asks Toomes if he knows who Spider-Man is. Toomes says he doesn't.
