Steven Grant, a timid gift-shop clerk at a London museum, loves ancient Egypt. He chains his ankle to the bed so he won't wander at night.
One morning, Steven wakes up in an Austrian mountain village, clutching a golden scarab.
In the village, a man named Arthur Harrow is judging people's hearts with a set of scales. He demands the scarab.
Back in London, Steven notices a man with his face speaking from the mirror: Marc. When a monster attacks at the museum, Steven lets Marc take over, and Marc transforms into a white-clad hero to defeat it.
Marc Spector is a former soldier and mercenary who serves as the avatar of the moon god Khonshu, punishing evildoers.
Marc's wife, Layla, visits Steven, who didn't even know he was married.
Steven learns to transform too, becoming the white-suited Mr. Knight.
Harrow is searching for the tomb of Ammit, a crocodile-headed goddess who would judge people before they commit any crime. Marc and the others head to Egypt.
Harrow and Marc face the Egyptian gods, who refuse to stop Harrow. Angry, Khonshu rearranges the stars to reveal an ancient night sky, and is imprisoned in stone for it.
Steven and Layla find Ammit's tomb inside a pyramid.
Inside the tomb, Harrow shoots Marc.
Marc wakes up in a psychiatric hospital, where Harrow appears as his doctor. Then the hippo goddess Taweret appears and tells him he's dead.
In the afterlife, their hearts are weighed. They travel through their past memories.
As a boy, Marc's younger brother Randall drowned in a cave. Their mother blamed Marc and abused him.
Steven was created to shield Marc's mind from that pain.
Steven falls into the sands of the afterlife and turns to stone.
Marc refuses to leave Steven behind and goes back for him. They return to life together.
Harrow frees Ammit. Layla becomes Taweret's avatar and fights with new powers.
Over Cairo, the giant Khonshu battles Ammit. Marc and Steven fight Harrow, and Ammit is sealed inside his body.
Marc and Steven ask Khonshu to release them, and he agrees.
Harrow is taken from a hospital and brought before Khonshu. He's shot by a third identity, neither Marc nor Steven: Jake Lockley.
