On Knowhere, now the Guardians' home, Rocket walks alone listening to music. Peter is drinking away his grief over Gamora.
Suddenly Adam, a golden young man, flies in and tries to take Rocket. The Guardians drive him off, but Rocket is critically injured.
When they try to treat him, a device inside Rocket threatens to kill him. It was planted by OrgoCorp, the company that made him.
In Rocket's unconscious mind, memories return. As a baby raccoon, he was reshaped by the scientist known as the High Evolutionary.
Rocket befriends other modified animals: an otter named Lylla, a walrus named Teefs and a rabbit named Floor.
Rocket is so smart he solves problems the scientist can't. The High Evolutionary wants to use his mind.
To get the code that disables the device, the Guardians head to OrgoCorp's headquarters, a building made of living flesh.
Peter asks Gamora, now with the Ravagers, for help. But this Gamora is from 2014 and doesn't know him.
In spacesuits, the Guardians bumble their way inside, find where the code is, and are chased by the High Evolutionary's people.
Following the trail, the Guardians reach a planet that looks just like Earth, populated by animals remade into people.
In Rocket's memories, the scientist moves to destroy his failed experiments. Rocket tries to save his friends, but Lylla and the others are shot. Rocket scars the scientist's face and escapes.
When his creation disappoints him, the High Evolutionary wipes out the entire planet.
They get the code, but Rocket's heart stops. In a world of light, he meets Lylla, who tells him it isn't his time yet.
The Guardians' frantic efforts bring Rocket back.
The High Evolutionary's ship holds many captive children and animals. The Guardians decide to save them all.
Working together, the Guardians fight their way down a corridor. Rocket confronts the High Evolutionary.
As the ship collapses, Peter is nearly lost in space. Adam saves him.
Peter decides to go back to Earth to see his grandfather. Mantis sets off to find herself, and Nebula and Drax stay on Knowhere.
Peter hands leadership of the Guardians to Rocket.
Rocket's new Guardians are protecting people across the galaxy.
On Earth, Peter has breakfast with his grandfather. Then: "The Legendary Star-Lord will return."
