1980, Missouri. Peter's mother Meredith drives happily with the man she loves. He plants a glowing seedling deep in the woods.
Thirty-four years later, the Guardians fight a giant space monster to protect valuable batteries for the golden-skinned Sovereign. Behind them, Baby Groot happily dances to the music.
Their payment is Nebula, Gamora's captured adopted sister. But Rocket has secretly stolen some batteries, and Queen Ayesha's fleet chases them.
Just as the swarm of ships closes in, a mysterious man wipes them all out on his own. The Guardians crash-land on a forest planet.
The man introduces himself as Ego, Peter's father. With him is Mantis, who can sense people's feelings.
Peter, Gamora and Drax go to Ego's planet. Rocket and Groot stay behind to fix the ship and guard Nebula.
Yondu's crew, hired by Ayesha, comes to capture Peter. But Yondu hesitates to hand him over, his crew mutinies, and he and Rocket are captured.
With Baby Groot's help, Yondu gets back his whistle-controlled arrow and takes out the mutineers. He reveals he knows why Ego wanted Peter, and that's why he never delivered him.
Ego is a godlike being: the planet itself is his body. Peter has inherited his power and learns to form a ball of light in his hands. Playing catch with his father, he's as happy as a child.
But Ego's goal is to grow the seedlings he planted across the universe and turn everything into himself. For that, he needs Peter's power.
Ego admits he put the tumor in Peter's mother's head. Enraged, Peter shoots him.
Warned by Mantis, Gamora and Drax find a cave full of the bones of Ego's other children. Nebula fights Gamora, then admits all she ever wanted was a sister, and they join forces.
Yondu and Rocket arrive, and the whole team is together. Rocket builds a bomb, and tiny Groot carries it to Ego's core, after being told over and over which button not to press.
Peter fights Ego with his own powers to buy time. The bomb goes off and Ego dies. With him goes Peter's power, and he becomes an ordinary man.
Escaping the dying planet, Yondu puts the only spacesuit on Peter and dies in space. His last words: Ego may have been Peter's father, but he wasn't his dad.
At Yondu's funeral, the ships of his old Ravager comrades gather and light up the sky. Peter realizes Yondu was his real dad.
Nebula leaves alone to hunt Thanos. Rocket, realizing how much he and Yondu had in common, cries.
There are five scenes during and after the credits, including Yondu's old team reuniting, Ayesha creating a new being named Adam, and Groot as a moody teenager.
