Ohio, 1995. Young Natasha and her little sister Yelena live with their father Alexei and mother Melina. They look like an ordinary family, but they're Russian spies posing as one.
Their mission over, the family flees at night by plane to Cuba. Yelena doesn't know they were never a real family.
In Cuba, the program's leader, Dreykov, takes the girls. They're sent to the Red Room to be brutally trained as spies.
After Civil War, Natasha is wanted for breaking the government's accords. Evading Secretary Ross, she hides in a cabin in Norway.
Meanwhile, Yelena, working as a Widow, is hit with a red gas that frees her from mind control. She sends vials of it to Natasha's safe house.
After Natasha picks up the vials, she's attacked by Taskmaster, a fighter who copies anyone's moves.
Natasha tracks the sender to Budapest and finds Yelena. They fight fiercely before finally talking.
Natasha thought she had killed Dreykov and ended the Red Room long ago. He's alive, and his Widows are still operating worldwide.
Hunted by Widows and Taskmaster, the sisters race through Budapest.
To find the Red Room, the sisters break their 'father' Alexei out of a Russian prison. He was once the Soviet super soldier Red Guardian.
They visit their 'mother' Melina on her pig farm. The family's first dinner in years is awkward and full of arguments.
Melina contacts Dreykov, and the family is captured. But it's part of a plan: Natasha has disguised herself as Melina.
The Red Room's headquarters is a massive base hovering in the sky. Natasha confronts Dreykov.
Dreykov gives off a scent that stops any Widow from harming him. Natasha breaks her own nose to sever the nerve and break the lock.
Taskmaster is Antonia, Dreykov's daughter, injured in an explosion Natasha caused years ago and controlled by her father.
Alexei and Melina bring the base down while Yelena frees the Widows with the red gas. It breaks apart, and Natasha and Yelena escape in a midair battle. Dreykov is killed.
Natasha uses the red gas to free Antonia.
Natasha leaves the freed Widows in Yelena's care and goes to rescue her captured friends.
Later, Yelena visits Natasha's grave. Valentina appears and tells her that Clint Barton is to blame for Natasha's death.
