1989. Scientist Hank Pym discovers S.H.I.E.L.D. has been secretly trying to copy the shrinking particles he invented, and quits in anger. In front of Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, he swears no one will ever have his technology.
The present day. Scott Lang, a burglar jailed for robbing a crooked corporation to give the money back to its victims, finishes his sentence. His chatty friend Luis picks him up.
Scott gets a job at an ice cream shop but is fired when they find out about his record. He shows up for his daughter Cassie's birthday, but his ex-wife and her fiancé, police officer Paxton, tell him to come back when he can pay child support.
Meanwhile, Hank's former protégé Darren Cross, who forced him out of his own company, is close to perfecting the Yellowjacket, a shrinking combat suit. Hank's daughter Hope works at Cross's side.
Desperate for money, Scott takes a job Luis found: cracking an old rich man's safe. Inside is nothing but an old leather suit and a helmet.
Trying on the suit at home, Scott presses a button and shrinks to the size of an ant, fleeing for his life through a flooding bathtub. Terrified, he goes to return the suit and gets arrested.
A visitor posing as his lawyer is Hank. With the suit and the help of ants, Scott escapes jail. It was all a test Hank set up.
Hank explains that if Cross sells the Yellowjacket to the wrong people, the world is in danger, and asks Scott to steal it.
Hope teaches Scott to fight, and Hank teaches him to shrink, grow and control ants. Soon he can fly on the back of a winged ant.
Hope is angry her father won't let her wear the suit. Hank finally tells her about her mother, Janet. She fought alongside him as a hero and vanished into the Quantum Realm after shrinking too far to stop a missile.
Scott sneaks into an Avengers facility to get a device they need. He runs into the Falcon, fights him, and gets away with it.
Luis and fellow thieves Dave and Kurt join in, and the break-in at Pym Tech begins.
Scott shrinks down and destroys the company's computers, but Cross catches on. He holds Hank at gunpoint, then escapes wearing the Yellowjacket suit.
Scott fights Cross at tiny size inside a helicopter, and the battle tumbles into a briefcase.
Cross appears in Cassie's bedroom. Shrunk down, the two fight on her toy train set. From a normal size, it looks like a toy train falling over.
Cross's armor is too strong to break. Knowing he may never come back, Scott shrinks even smaller, gets inside the suit and destroys Cross. Then he keeps shrinking, into the Quantum Realm.
Lost in the strange realm, Scott thinks of Cassie's voice and manages to return to normal size. Hank begins to hope Janet could come back too.
Paxton accepts Scott, and he joins Cassie's family at the table. Luis brings word that someone from the Avengers is looking for Ant-Man.
Hank shows Hope the new Wasp suit he'd been building for Janet.
Captain America and the Falcon are dealing with someone they've found. Sam says he knows a guy who can help: Ant-Man.
