Hank recalls what happened 30 years ago. In 1987, he and Janet, as Ant-Man and the Wasp, set out to stop a nuclear missile. To get inside it, Janet shrank past the point of no return and vanished into the Quantum Realm. Little Hope was told her mother had gone away on a trip.
The present. Because he joined the fight in Civil War, Scott is serving two years of house arrest. He practices drums and plays elaborate games with his daughter Cassie at home. Three days remain.
Scott dreams of Janet playing hide-and-seek with young Hope, a scene he's never seen. Troubled, he calls Hank for the first time in years.
The next day, Hope whisks Scott away, leaving a giant ant wearing his ankle monitor in his place. Because Scott took the suit to Germany, Hank and Hope have been on the run for violating the Accords.
In their shrinkable, portable lab, they've been building a tunnel to the Quantum Realm. When they switched it on once, Scott's dream linked him to Janet.
Hope tries to buy a missing part from black-market dealer Sonny Burch, but he wants Hank's whole lab. In her Wasp suit, Hope takes down his men.
Then a mysterious enemy who phases through walls, Ghost, appears and steals the shrunken lab.
Hank turns to his old colleague Bill Foster, who helps them find Ghost's hideout.
Ghost is Ava. As a child, she lost her parents in an accident in her father's lab and her body became unstable, always phasing. She's in constant pain and won't live much longer.
Bill Foster raised Ava. They believe energy from Janet in the Quantum Realm could heal Ava's body, even if it puts Janet at risk.
Janet speaks through Scott's body and tells them where she is in the Quantum Realm.
Captured by Burch's men and given truth serum, Luis rambles on and on, and gives away where the lab is.
Ghost takes the lab, and Burch's crew chases them all. On the hills of San Francisco, a wild chase unfolds with cars that shrink and grow.
Scott grows giant and wades through the bay to get the lab back, with help from Cassie and Luis.
Hank travels into the Quantum Realm in a small pod. In its strange landscape, he finally finds Janet.
Hank and Janet return, and Hope embraces her mother for the first time in 30 years.
Using abilities she gained in the Quantum Realm, Janet eases some of Ava's pain.
Scott makes it home seconds before Agent Woo arrives to check on him, and his house arrest ends safely.
Scott enters the Quantum Realm to collect energy for Ava. But outside, Hank, Janet and Hope turn to dust and vanish. Scott is stranded in the Quantum Realm.
In Scott's empty house, the giant ant plays the drums while an emergency broadcast plays on TV.
