Years earlier, Peter's father Richard records a video about his research and boards a private plane with Peter's mother, Mary.
An assassin attacks them aboard the plane. Richard finishes uploading his data, but the plane goes down.
In the present, Spider-Man chases Aleksei Sytsevich through the city after he steals a truck of dangerous cargo. Along the way he saves Oscorp engineer Max Dillon.
Peter barely makes it to graduation, in time to hear Gwen's valedictorian speech.
Peter keeps seeing Gwen's late father. Haunted by his promise, he breaks up with her.
Peter's childhood friend Harry returns to his dying father, Norman, who tells him the family illness will claim him too before he dies.
Harry takes over Oscorp. From his father's research, he comes to believe Spider-Man's blood could cure him.
Max, now Spider-Man's devoted fan, is left alone fixing equipment at Oscorp on his birthday. An accident sends him into a tank of electric eels.
Turned into living electricity, Max drains power in Times Square. Spider-Man tries to calm him, but police fire and the giant screens make Max feel betrayed.
Subdued by Spider-Man, Max is locked up at Ravencroft and experimented on. He starts calling himself Electro.
Harry begs Spider-Man for his blood. Unsure what it might do to him, Peter refuses, and Harry is crushed.
Gwen tells Peter she's been offered a place at Oxford in England.
Following clues his father left, Peter finds a hidden lab in an abandoned subway station.
In the video, Richard explains that Oscorp wanted to turn his work into weapons. He refused, and because he'd used his own DNA in the spiders, no one else could use them.
Forced out of Oscorp, Harry frees Electro from Ravencroft and joins forces with him. He then injects himself with Oscorp's spider venom and is transformed.
Peter catches up with Gwen and tells her he'll follow her to England.
Electro seizes the power station and blacks out the city. Working together, Peter and Gwen overload him and stop him.
The transformed Harry arrives on a glider, works out Spider-Man's identity and snatches Gwen.
Peter defeats Harry in the clock tower, but when his web catches the falling Gwen, it's too late. Gwen dies.
Devastated, Peter gives up being Spider-Man and visits Gwen's grave every day.
A mysterious man visits Harry at Ravencroft, and Harry tells him to start assembling a team of special people.
Rewatching Gwen's graduation speech, Peter finds the strength to carry on.
Aleksei rampages through the streets in a rhino-shaped battle suit. As a little boy in a Spider-Man costume stands up to him, the real Spider-Man returns.
