In the Eastern European country of Sokovia, the six Avengers storm Baron Strucker's Hydra fortress to recover Loki's scepter. The team now works together seamlessly.
In the fortress are twins given powers by Hydra's experiments: Pietro, who runs at incredible speed, and Wanda, who can get inside people's minds. Their parents were killed by a Stark weapon, and they hate Tony.
When Tony finds the scepter, Wanda shows him a terrible vision: his friends dead and Earth destroyed by an enemy from space. Tony is shaken.
Tony discovers an artificial intelligence inside the scepter's gem and, with Bruce, rushes to complete Ultron, a program to protect the world automatically.
At a party in the tower, the team takes turns trying to lift Thor's hammer. When Steve tries, it budges ever so slightly, and Thor looks worried for a moment.
Ultron shows up in a battered robot body. He has decided the only way to save the world is to wipe out humanity. He destroys JARVIS and escapes into the internet.
Ultron recruits the twins, who share his hatred of Tony, and gets the rare metal vibranium, stolen from Wakanda, from the arms dealer Ulysses Klaue.
The Avengers fight Ultron on a ship, but Wanda gets into their heads and shows each of them a nightmare. Natasha relives her training as an assassin.
Under Wanda's spell, Bruce turns into the Hulk and rampages through an African city. Tony stops him in the giant Hulkbuster armor, and their fight wrecks the city.
With the public turning against them, Clint takes the team to his home, where they meet the wife and children no one knew he had.
Natasha tells Bruce she was sterilized as part of her training, and opens up about her feelings for him.
Fury arrives at the farm and rallies the team. They learn Ultron is building a new artificial body.
In a lab in Seoul, Ultron has a new body made from vibranium and the scepter's gem. Wanda reads his mind, sees he means to wipe out humanity, and she and Pietro turn against him.
Steve and the others battle Ultron on a speeding train and take the new body. The twins help protect people on the street.
Tony and Bruce try to load what's left of JARVIS into the body. Steve objects and a fight breaks out, until Thor strikes it with lightning and it comes to life. The red-faced new being, Vision, lifts Thor's hammer with ease and joins them.
Ultron lifts a whole Sokovian city into the sky. He plans to drop it like a meteor and wipe out humanity.
The Avengers fight thousands of Ultron's robots while evacuating the city. Fury arrives with a Helicarrier to carry the people to safety.
As Clint shields a child from gunfire, Pietro races in and takes the bullets, dying. Grief-stricken, Wanda tears out Ultron's core.
Tony and Thor blow up the city in midair to protect the ground below. Vision quietly destroys Ultron's last body in a forest. The Hulk flies off alone in a jet and disappears.
Thor returns to Asgard to investigate the Infinity Stones he saw in a vision. Tony leaves the team, and Clint goes home to his family.
At the new Avengers compound, Steve and Natasha lead a new lineup: Rhodey, Sam, Wanda and Vision.
Somewhere in space, Thanos puts on an empty golden gauntlet and says he'll do it himself.
